A new mission has begun in Southern Missouri. West Plains Vanguard, a community-driven esports organization, officially launched July 4 with the goal of creating competitive gaming opportunities, career pathways and industry education for players across the region.

Founded in West Plains, Missouri, the organization was established to bring structure and opportunity to the rapidly growing esports industry within rural communities. West Plains Vanguard aims to serve as both a competitive esports organization and a hub for industry development, helping local players, creators and professionals build meaningful careers in gaming.

“Esports has become a global industry worth billions of dollars, but opportunities to participate in that ecosystem are often limited in smaller communities,” said founder Nickales Lawson. “West Plains Vanguard was created to ensure that talent in Southern Missouri has a place to grow, compete and develop professional skills in esports.”

The organization’s mission centers on three key objectives: competition, community and career development.

West Plains Vanguard will field competitive teams, host community gaming events and create educational opportunities designed to introduce players to the wide range of roles within the esports industry. While professional players are often the most visible part of esports, the industry also includes careers in broadcasting, event management, marketing, coaching, production and technology.

By highlighting this broader ecosystem, West Plains Vanguard hopes to equip players and aspiring professionals with skills that extend beyond the game itself.

“Not everyone will become a professional player, but esports teaches teamwork, communication, leadership and strategic thinking,” Lawson said. “Those are skills that translate into countless careers.”

The launch of West Plains Vanguard also marks the beginning of a long-term vision for the organization. Plans include hosting regional esports events, partnering with local businesses and educational institutions, and eventually establishing a physical gaming and community space known as The FOB, which will serve as the operational home of the organization.

As esports continues to grow worldwide, West Plains Vanguard aims to ensure Southern Missouri is part of that future.

Operating under the motto “Your Game, Our Mission,” the organization invites players, fans and community partners to join the Vanguard and help build the next chapter of esports in the Ozarks.
